Privacy Policy
The short version: we collect almost nothing, sell nothing, and run one analytics tool we are happy to name.
Effective date: September 12, 2026. This policy applies to the website briolet.com (the "Site"), which is run by Briolet ("we," "us"). Please read it alongside our About and Contact pages.
Bottom line: Briolet has no user accounts, no login, no comment forms, no checkout, and no newsletter signups. There is nowhere on this Site for you to type personal information. We run no advertising and we do not sell or share your information with anyone. The one thing we do measure is aggregate page traffic, described plainly in section 1.
1. What we collect
Information you provide
The only information you can provide to us is a message you choose to send to hello@briolet.com — for example, a correction or a topic request. If you email us, we keep only what you write (including your email address as the return address) so we can reply. We do not add you to any list, sell your address, or use it for anything other than answering you.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand which articles are read and how people reach them. It is loaded directly on our pages — we do not run it through any additional tag manager. GA4 records standard engagement data such as the pages you view, the approximate time you spend, your browser and device type, the referring site or search engine, and an approximate location derived from a truncated IP address (Google does not log the full address for this purpose). We have not enabled advertising features, remarketing, or any form of cross-site profiling, and we do not connect analytics data to any identity.
You can opt out of GA4 on any site using Google's Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, and most browsers and extensions will block the script outright. Blocking it does not affect anything on this Site — there is nothing here that depends on being measured.
Automatically collected data
Beyond analytics, our hosting provider (Cloudflare) may briefly hold standard server logs — an IP address, browser type, and the page requested — for security and to keep the Site running. We do not use those logs to build profiles or identify individual visitors, and they are not sold or shared with third parties.
2. How we use and share information
We use the limited information above only to (a) respond to messages you send us, (b) measure aggregate readership so we know which subjects deserve more research, and (c) operate and secure the Site. We do not sell personal information. We do not share it with third parties for advertising or marketing. We may disclose information only if required by law, or to protect the safety, rights, or property of our users or the public.
3. Cookies
Google Analytics 4 sets its own first-party cookies (commonly named _ga and _ga_<property-id>) so it can tell a returning visit from a new one. That is the entire extent of our cookie use. We set no advertising cookies, no personalization cookies, and no cross-site tracking cookies. Our hosting infrastructure may also set a strictly necessary technical cookie or cache indicator required to serve the page reliably; those do not track you across sites.
You can block or delete any of these through your browser settings without losing access to any part of this Site.
4. Do Not Track
We do not track you across other websites, so there is no cross-site profile for a Do Not Track signal to switch off. If you want to prevent the aggregate analytics described above, an opt-out add-on or your browser's own blocking tools will do it completely.
5. California privacy rights (CCPA / CPRA)
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) give you certain rights over "personal information." Briolet does not sell or share personal information and does not use it for cross-context behavioral advertising, so most of these rights will have nothing to act upon in practice. We honor them in full regardless:
- The right to know. You may ask what personal information we have collected about you, including its categories, sources, purposes, and any third parties it was shared with. The honest answer is normally "aggregate analytics data that does not identify you" plus anything you chose to email us.
- The right to delete. You may ask us to delete any personal information we hold about you. If you have emailed us and want your message deleted, just say so and we will remove it.
- The right to opt out of sale and sharing. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of. We will never do so without giving you a clear, up-front choice.
- The right to correct. You may ask us to correct inaccurate personal information we hold about you.
- The right to limit sensitive data. We do not collect or use "sensitive" personal information as defined by the CPRA. Nothing on this Site asks for it.
- The right to non-discrimination. We will never deny services, charge different prices, or treat you differently for exercising any privacy right.
- Shine the Light (California Civil Code § 1798.83). California law entitles residents to ask, once a year, how we have shared their personal information with third parties for their own direct-marketing purposes. We do not do this, and we will answer such a request in writing.
To exercise any of these rights, email hello@briolet.com. We will verify your identity as reasonably necessary and respond within the time the law requires (generally 45 days). You may also use an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf.
6. Children's privacy
The Site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it promptly.
7. Data retention and security
Any email you send us is kept only as long as needed to handle your message and any reasonable follow-up. Analytics data is retained according to our GA4 property settings and is aggregate in nature. We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the little information we hold. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we keep our exposure minimal by design.
8. Third-party links
Our guides may link to other websites for further reading — museum records, published standards, auction archives. This policy applies only to briolet.com; once you leave our Site, that site's own privacy practices apply. We recommend checking any site's policy before you share information with it.
9. Changes to this policy
If we make material changes, we will update the "Effective date" at the top of this page and note the change here. Continued use of the Site after a change means you accept the updated policy.
10. Contact
Questions, corrections, or requests about this policy or your data? Reach us at hello@briolet.com, or through our contact page.
Reminder: everything on this site is editorial research, not professional gemological advice. We do not appraise, authenticate or value stones. This privacy policy is general information and is not legal advice — for questions specific to your situation, consult an attorney.
